Greater Joy Missionary Baptist Church         Church Plant

Rev. Shelton Daniel has a burden for an urban ministry.  He began a new African-American church plant in South Rocky Mount called Greater Joy Baptist Church last August with a core group of 12 people.  The new ministry has experienced phenomenal growth.  They began by systematically sharing the gospel through a door-to-door visitation program.  An evangelism team has even shared the gospel in the Wal-Mart parking lot.  The church does not hesitate to minister to hurting and often hopeless people (low income, single-parent households, prison parolees, drug addicts, etc) that need a new beginning in Christ.  People commit their lives to Christ weekly through this ministry.

Greater Joy meets for an early service on Sunday mornings and conducts “Sunday School” small-group Bible studies on Tuesday evenings.  His desire is to establish an evangelistic, Bible-believing, SBC congregation that will have a transforming impact on families.

Our goal is not just to help establish another church.  We want to help support a large kingdom-building congregation with a God-sized vision.   Greater Joy will be a great ministry partner for the North Roanoke Association in the future.   Together, we can have a huge impact on the South Rocky Mount community.  This is a wonderful opportunity to be “laborers together with God” and encourage our respective congregations.

Some of the benefits of being involved in church planting are as follows:

*We have an opportunity to work together to unite the association in ministry.

*Existing churches will be strengthened as they are encouraged to promote an outward focus of ministry to our communities.

*We are utilizing the Hilda Mayo Church Planting Fund, our largest financial asset for ministry.

*Establishing new churches will raise our awareness of evangelism.

*Working together in such large projects reminds us that we are part of the work of the Kingdom of God – leading people to a personal relationship to the Lord Jesus.

As we step out in faith, we are reminded that God is our security.  He calls us to ministry and He will supply our needs as we faithfully serve Him in the advancement of His Kingdom.  “We see the hand of God most clearly when we join Him in ministry.”  (Henry Blackaby)

Congregations within our fellowship want to see our association involved in a relevant ministry.  Participation and contributions to the association will continue to increase as churches see funding used for ministry.
